29.10.09 20:55 - An open letter to the Internet

Yeah, my journal's going Friends Only. I didn't want to do this, in fact, I avoided it for as long as possible. I used to have it public for Simon, who didn't always post with his LJ account, and for the random people passing by. I had a good time talking randomly with Arancaytar from Spiderweb forums, and with Eli Dupree, who found my journal via a Google search, but I guess those days are over. Recent events has shown me this is no longer an option. While I respect the individual in question, I had rather thought he'd have respected my wishes better than this.

Maybe in a few years, I can open this back up to the public. 'Til then, it's been fun, y'all. May you have more sunshine than storms, an abundance of laughter and good music, and God's still small voice directing your feet onwards in this life.

Best,
Sarah/Arcblade/that random girl

13.10.09 08:32 - The Passover Game, and why today is a good day

Today is gonna be a good day.

The Passover (the overpass from KE to main campus) has a game that I and a few others play as we walk over and back every day. While crossing the bridge, we walk directly over East Beltline, which has four lanes of traffic. As I pass over each lane of traffic, I check to see if any cars would have run me over if I were walking directly on the road.

There's no particular point system, but the larger and more exotic the vehicle I get hit by, the better I feel the day is going to be (because I didn't actually get hit).

Today, I got hit by an EMT ambulance. :D Today is a good day.

22.9.09 10:41 - Free software!

Apparently Calvin just joined some kind of Microsoft program that gets the staff and students in CS and Engineering Departments free Microsoft software. Not Office, but XP, Vista, and Windows 7, along with some coding software I may just yoink merely 'cause it's free.

It's funny, though, because now I have a copy of Windows XP Professional. And it was free. And legal. This is ironic, because maybe 2 weeks ago I finished installing/setting up a bootlegged copy of XP Home on a partition in my laptop. And y'know, if I'd just waited, I could have had it legally, easily, and not had to use a DVD to burn stuff on. Or had to fiddle with that stupid WPA kill application because the dratted thing wouldn't validate.

Think maybe God's trying to tell me something here. Heh.

29.4.09 21:47 - At some point in time...

At some point, someone is going to look at this new handwritten Zondervan Bible. They're going to look at Nehemiah 9:30, and ask themselves, "What creepy weird person's handwriting is that?"

And that will be my bad handwriting, mixed with the calligraphy I learned inn middle school. It was to make it more legible. :P

7.4.09 09:50 - You know you're getting old when...

You know you're getting old and responsible when you find an abandoned earthmover, still on with the keys in, and don't hijack it to play in the construction site.

5.3.09 18:01 - Very unorthodox, but...

At dinner today, Avery and I came up with something I consider xkcd-worthy. Salad dressing as a topping for ice cream. We've tried chocolate with ranch dressing. We rate it "confusing." This needs to be looked into more.

20.2.09 19:04 - Cold Knight Club, part 2

This year was not nearly as bad as last year. For instance, I drove myself back, and so thus didn't get chilled to the bone like last time. I didn't bruise my foot. I did manage to scrape up my elbow pretty nicely. I got the shower before Kelise even got back, so I cheerfully washed my hair a bit too. My hands and feet got slightly frozen, but no frostbite this time. I do have a large lumb (the size of my fist) and bruising on my thigh above my knee, but I expect that will heal.

20.2.09 13:10 - Should I be worried? I kinda think so.

Here's what you do:
1. Go to Googlism
2. Type your name
3. Type the first 15 things that come up. Or choose the most entertaining ones.

1. sarah is here
2. sarah is evil
3. sarah is seventeen

18.2.09 15:42 - Exercise-related decisions

I've decided that while I am probably capable of the discipline needed to exercise without distractions, I don't think I'm going to pursue it too actively.

There are a multitude of things one can do while on a stationary bike, but I think I've made a noteworthy contribution to geekery today. I played all the way through the "Meta Knightmare" minigame in Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, over the course of my hour-long bicycling session today. I beat my record by a minute, surpassed my calories burned record by at least 20, and barely paid attention to that fact that I was sweating and working hard.

I think I should work hard to find new and innovative ways of combining physical exercise and geekery. For great justice!

11.2.09 18:18 - A moment in geekness

This is a moment in time I should remember. I have a brand new Macbook hooked up to a massive set of speakers in the Pit, SB 010, playing the 14 year old ShadowWraith Soundtrack. While Andrew dances. And Benji is now dancing too.

:D

20.1.09 12:51 - A moment in time, a moment in history

I just finished watching the inauguration of Barack Obama as the first black President. It's a great moment in America's history. There were no noticeable assassination attempts. So here I am. Here's the country, at a crossroad. My complex nature wars between cynicism and optimism. Obama is quite the speaker. I can't honestly tell which side is winning, cynicism or hope. I think Obama's worst opponents, those who will most hinder his efforts to change this country, won't be the disbelievers, or the media. I think his worst opponents are the Senate and the House of Representatives. They're supposed to represent the people, and they don't, really. Not well. They're not of the same background as we are, most of them. So that leaves it up to the people to encourage them to vote the right way, or else. We'll see.

I'd like to be optimistic about this. I just really hate to be disappointed.

Edit: I saw Yo Yo Ma on TV! He and a bunch of other amazing instrumentalists played before Obama spoke. They were awesome, but Yo Yo Ma looked so happy and joyful, playing away at his cello. He is made of win. That is all.

11.1.09 19:47 - I honestly think this explains a lot.

8.1.09 23:44 - Long-winded DM room description

Freakin' long description of my dorm room. You've been warned! )

15.11.08 14:14 - The madness lives on!

Yes, this is a demented crane made from a dollar bill.

3.10.08 13:42

Several weeks ago, in basic Philosophy class, we were discussing the basic kinds of arguments (like the forms and what not). So an old fallacious argument came to mind, and, on a whim, I posed it to my professor. The argument is:

God is love.
Love is blind.
Therefore, God must be blind.

Keep in mind that this is a Christian college. So instead of getting a quick answer, he proceeded to ponder it for 15 seconds and decide that he needed to think about it longer, after putting forth a theory for why it doesn't work. I reminded him about a week later and he admitted he hadn't really pondered it long enough to explain it.

Maybe a week later, he comes back to class and tells me that he'll address it later, in class. He turned up today with an entire two-sided HANDOUT explaining why the simple argument doesn't quite work the way it looks like it does.

And me? I am thoroughly amused.

I should try messing with my professors more often. (grins)

Edit(10-6-08): And NOW he's lecturing on it!

Lecture started at 1:35, ended at 1:44.

He first thought the meanings of the word "is" might be skewing the logic.

"is" of identity and "is" of predication don't work together in A=B, B=C, A=C if they're in that order. However, the God is blind begins with predication and continues with identity, so that's not the problem.

Instead, he decided that the word "blind" needed examination: he felt that "blind" meant (in the second one) that you're likely to overlook the faults of someone you love.

So God is likely to overlook the faults of someone he loves.

3.9.08 01:48 - Addicted to it, so might as well post it.

Who's there knocking at my window?
The owl and the Dead Boy
This night whispers my name
All the dying children

Virgin snow beneath my feet
Painting the world in white
I tread the way and lose myself into a tale

Come hell or high water
My search will go on
Clayborn Voyage without an end

(chorus)
A nightingale in a golden cage
That's me locked inside reality's maze
Come someone make my heavy heart light
Come undone, bring me back to life
It all starts with a lullaby

Journey homeward bound
A sound of a dolphin calling
Tearing off the mask of man
The tower, my sole guide

This is who I am
Escapist, paradise seeker
Farewell, now time to fly
Out of sight, out of time, away from all lies

A nightingale in a golden cage
That's me locked inside reality's maze
Come someone make my heavy heart light
Come undone, bring me back to life
It all starts with a lullaby

6.8.08 17:02

Jeff Vogel thanked me!!! (dances)

Awesomeness.

6.8.08 16:35 - Jot it or lose it...

I had an idea while I was brushing my teeth. There should be a "Song Encylopedia." It should have a list of nearly every song in existance, lyrics, and the artists that have recorded it, in chronological order. I kinda think WikiMedia would be best for this sort of enterprise, but I'm not sure who I'd suggest it to.

4.8.08 23:34

Comment and I'll give you a letter; then you have to list ten things you love that begin with that letter. Afterward, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

kitsunewings gave me "R"

In no particular order, because I don't feel like thinking too hard:

1. RPGs
2. Red albino cornsnakes
3. Revelations (the last book of the Bible)
4. "Roll to Me" by Del Amitri
5. Rob
6. Raspberries
7. Relaxing
8. Relatives, when they're not actively trying to piss me off.
9. "Rise" by Yoko Kanno
10. "Ride on Shooting Star" by the Pillows

I proably cheated by citing three songs, but to be honest, I really love music.

4.6.08 11:58 - Hmm, daylight

So, it's semi-official. I have a job. I have yet to determine if it's a sucky job.

I'm going to work 3rd shift (otherwise known as Graveyard shift) at WalMart in the clothing section. If the clothing is pristine and not rifled through, it's going to be my fault.
